John Anderson

John lives in Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park and has been a tour guide for the last 5 years during the spring, summer and autumn months. In winter, he works as a fully qualified ski instructor. He has a great knowledge and passion for Scotland and a particular interest in the Highlands and Islands. His passion lies in the history, people, geography and geology of the country, and also loves to regale the many myths and legends of the lands, from Nessie to the fairies of Skye.

Having worked on several Highland Estates he has first-hand experience of how this area of highland culture works. From the traditional sports of shooting and fishing – ask him about bagging a McNab – to the land management and modern techniques of running an estate in some of the most rural areas of Scotland, John’s experience in this area adds another dimension to his tours.

His hobbies and interests include skiing, walking, history, politics, whisky, craft beers and music. He also has a geek like interest in comics, classic and modern science fiction and vintage TV, as well as following cult series like Doctor Who, Game of Thrones and Outlander.

He says: “I am also a very keen mountaineer and mountain biker and keep a keen interest in all the latest political debates and social issues of Scotland today. I have travelled extensively through most of the Highlands for most of my life and love its great scenery and atmosphere".

tripadvisor feedback

We contacted Inverness Custom Tours for a one-day tour of Skye out of Inverness. It ended up being a great decision. The staff at ICT (Laura and Ian) helpfully answered our questions and designed a tour for our particular interests (heavy on history, lighter on hiking--but I imagine they would work with whatever a group wanted).

Our guide, John Anderson, was absolutely fantastic. With each stop, we learned about history, geology, culture, and more! Because of John and ICT, we feel like we really got to explore as much as we possibly could in a single day. Plus, by hiring a guide, we avoided driving on the single-track roads in Skye, which John expertly navigated. Having driven on vacation in remote places before, it was much more enjoyable for our entire group to have John driving and get to experience the beauty of the Highlands and Island of Skye!
